Afgelopen woensdag werd met een kleine ceremonie in de Gashouder de prestigieuze EU-prijs voor Cultural Heritage uitgereikt aan De Westergasfabriek. De prijs werd toegekend in de categrorie ‘Conservation’.
Uit het jury-rapport: “The Jury particularly appreciated the design concept of a durable and modest renovation in order to maintain the industrial character of the gasworks. The high quality of the immediate vicinity creates visual cohesion between different parts of the complex and the buildings. The new cultural function of the Westergasfabriek suits the project well, making the whole area a public quarter. It is an excellent example of both clear vision and of
management of the collaboration amongst government, business and creative endeavours.
In a European context, the Westergasfabriek is a model for the implementation of new creative, social and cultural life into an industrial heritage site.”
Er werd een plaquette aan de buitenkant van de gashouder onthuld als blijvende herinnering.
De uitreiking in de gashouder vond plaats in het witte paviljoen van architect Zaha Haddid dat voor het Holland Festival in de gashouder is opgetrokken (foto)
